How to Wear Your Valentine’s Day Dress All Year Round

I have fallen into this trap before. Valentine’s Day comes around and you tell yourself that you need a new dress. Whether you buy it new or gently used, you want to get that red dress for that special day with your special someone. As someone who is on a sustainability journey, I’m not here to lecture you about whether or not you should buy that red dress. What I will tell you is that we all fall into just wearing something once, like a lovely red dress for Valentine’s Day, and it just goes to waste. Part of my personal journey is to wear pieces in my closet multiple times, because I have had so many instances where I bought something and only wore it once. I do this the most with special occasion dresses. So my goal, and I hope it can be yours too, is to stop that cycle. Therefore, I grabbed a special occasion red dress from my closet and paired it with other items in my closet, in order to give you guys some ideas on how to wear a Valentine’s Day Dress All Year Round.

Everyday Casual

Just add a graphic tee, a jean shirt, and some comfy walking shoes and you’re ready to go. I got this graphic tee a couple of years ago. The jean camp shirt I’ve had for at least 5 years. The shoes I’ve had for about 3 years and they’re one of my favorite pairs! I tried to use items that people will likely have in their closet. So, you can use a chambray shirt or a jean jacket. You can also use sneakers.

Wear to Work

I work a full-time job as a Certified Public Accountant, so it tends to be a bit corporate. The great thing about it is that I have a lot of classic capsule pieces. To make the dress a little more classic work appropriate, I put on a basic white cardigan and a black blazer. To add a little interest, I have a gold studded black skinny belt to give the cardigan more shape and some leopard print shoes. These capsule pieces are so interchangeable, and an animal print shoe is so versatile. They are pieces that can be worn over and over again.

Cold Weather

We are in the midst of winter. This is a way that you can re-invent a cocktail dress for colder days. I am wearing a basic cream pullover sweater. I paired it with a double breasted plaid jacket and my favorite brown booties.

These are just some ideas using pieces that are capsule enough that I feel like most people will have in their own closets. So you see, the possibilities are endless. All you have to do is use what already have and have fun with it!
